Amp Fiddler Live! (European Tour 201) + DJ Gripper + Bligeness
Thursday 10th August 2017 - 7PM til 2AM
BUMS present a massive scoop for the area and our humble venue with Detroit's world renowned electronic soul superstar, AMP FIDDLER adding us to his high profile European Tour for 2017. A one-off opportunity to see this highly acclaimed artist at close quarters in our intimate private speakeasy lounge.
The talent that is Amp Fiddler has worked with George Clinton, Prince, Moodyman, Jamiroquai, Was (Not Was), The Brand New Heavies, Fishbone, Corrine Bailey Rae, Maxwell, Theo Parrish, Basement Jaxx, Kenny Dope, Wayne Kounty and Primal Scream amongst others.
After learning piano as a child, Amp Fiddler studied music at Oakland and Wayne State Universities, with the jazz great Harold McKinney. He joined a do-wop outfit, The Enchantments, as a teen, and then in 1983 received his big break when a friend, the legendary Bernie Worrell the Parliament/Funkadelic keyboardist passed a tape of his playing to George Clinton. Bernie was leaving the mothership, and Amp ended up replacing him, touring with Clinton and Parliament and Funkadelic around the globe for more than a decade.
Amp Fiddler's first solo album 'Waltz Of A Ghetto Fly' (PIAS/Wall Of Sound) utilised his early improvisational jazz roots and the follow up. 'Afrostrut' cemented Amp as a cult underground artist. Hooking up with Grace Jones' producers, Sly and Robbie for the LP 'Inspiration Information' (Strut) served to diversify the talented musician's sound even further.
Widely regarded as being the artist who mentored his close friend, the late J Dilla, introducing him to beatmaking and persuading him to stop looping samples on tape and taught him how to cut sounds up on Amp's Akai MPC, as well as influencing Detroit Hip Hop artists such as Slum Village.
Amp Fiddler's most recent album, 'Motor City Booty' (Midnight Riot) has just been remixed by underground pioneers such as Questlife, Mark E, Inkswel and Raw Sugar and more, to take Amp's original electrosoul vibe to new heights and depths. Mahogani Music are about to release Amp Fiddlers 2nd collaboration with an uber-cool Detroit house label (the first being the March release 'Gentrified Love Part 3" with Theo Parrish on Sound Signature), this time mixed by Louie Vega and collaborator Waajeed (Dirt Tech Rock), entitled 'So Sweet/It's Alright'.
Limited 2017 UK shows take in Glastonbury and The Southport Weekender, and his pre-Europe USA gigs are supported by the likes of Roy Ayers and Soul Clap, making this intimate performance at BUMS a must for the calendar.
Support will come from Barrow's own DJ Gripper (Kashmir Lounge, Amsterdam) playing the new and eclectic deep funk, electronica, afro and beats and Bligeness (Vinyl Cellar/Block Party) droppimg the Detroit beats, hip hop and associated styles.
