Don Letts - The Rebel Dread
Born in London in 1956, Don Letts was perfectly placed to explore the fledgling worlds of reggae and punk through his early exploits into music, film and fashion in a 70s Britain where these rebel cultures coexisted amidst turbulent social times.
DJing at legendary punk haunt, The Roxy and working at Acme Attraction, a fashion outlet down the road from Malcolm McClaren’s ‘Sex’ boutique, Letts is credited with bringing the punk and reggae scenes together, eventually working extensively as videographer and director with The Clash on acclaimed films Westway To The World and The Punk Rock Mivie. Letts also directed music videos for Musical Youth, Elvis Costello, The Psychedelic Furs and The Pretenders.
Musical ventures with Keith Levine and Jah Wobble (as Steel Leg v The Electric Dread) and with The Clash’s Mick Jones in Big Audio Dynamite again fused his Jamaican heritage with punk, new wave and electronic influences.
As a DJ, Don Letts has been influenced by many genres of electronic music, including the early B-boy and hip hop scenes in NYC and the fusion of styles in post punk and contemporary electronic music. This is evident in his hugely popular and respected BBC Radio 6 show, Culture Cladh.
Don Letts continues to catalog the marriage of art, film, writing, culture and music in a unique way that has influenced generations eith it’s original DIY punk ethic.

our resident and host is regarded as one of the finest DJs around and for good reason. Having been spinning and collecting music relentlessly for over 30 years, Gripper is as comfortable spinning 7 hour sets of house, deep house, and disco in the mix at BUMS as he is mixing up the jazz, dub, broken beat, electronica, left field and world exotica at his monthly residency at Amsterdam’s Kashmir Lounge.
